We asked 500 federal leaders if they’re planning to implement generative AI solutions, and whether they think their agency’s data is ready. The answers tell a story.

There is broad internal support to implement AI. Nearly all mission leaders—99% in fact—agree that investing in safe and effective AI is essential to fulfilling their organization’s mission, as do the overwhelming majority of IT and data & analytics professionals, and most report that their agency is mostly or completely prepared to use AI as part of its overall strategy.

But the results are only as good as the data. Most mission leaders are concerned that decision-makers within their organization are rushing to incorporate generative AI without understanding the data needed to ensure its success, and both data & analytics and IT professionals are even more inclined to agree.

To address this challenge, agencies can follow the lead of software engineers. Using automation in data and model validation, which is an established best practice in the software engineering industry, is key to bringing Gen AI to market in a safe and responsible way.
